Is there too much talk about money these days?

Over the past few months I have noticed many success gurus talking a lot about money and how much they and their clients make.

(Remember when it wasn't polite to talk about how much you make? I'm not saying I think we should go back to that, but is it swinging too far the other way?)

Well, all the talk has been about how despite the "recession" you can still make more than ever before. You just have to decide that's what you're going to do, and choose NOT to participate in the down economy. And they use extreme client examples to make their point.

And while I believe them and actively practice what they preach, I also am starting to feel like the entire focus is on money. And that bugs me a bit.

While I believe we should be paid well for what we do, I also know there are many other important reasons we do what we do.

I think we need to be very careful about placing ALL of our focus on the almighty dollar.

Here's a list of all the reasons I started my home-based business back in 1998 and am still grateful for that business every single day.

Review this list and remember all the reasons you started your business, or the reasons you want to start your business. Then I'd love it if you'd share your reasons by posting a comment.

1) To be home more with my kids

2) To have more flexibility and time freedom

3) To not miss out on important events in my kid's lives

4) To be the one parenting my children

5) To do the work I wanted to do, and on my terms

6) To be able to work with the clients I wanted to work with

7) To fulfill all of my creative passions vs. just doing a job (e.g. writing)

8) To contribute, serve and help others

9) To reap the benefits of my work vs. working for someone else's benefit

10) To allow me more time to take care of myself (e.g. exercise, etc.)

11) To be available for my kids when they come home from school

12) To enable me to better balance work, life and family without being stressed out all the time

And the list could probably go on forever! There are so many reasons I started my home-based business and so many benefits I have enjoyed over the past 11 years and hope to continue enjoying for many years to come.

Yes, the fact that I can support myself and my family very comfortably is important, but not to the exclusion of all these other reasons.

Let's don't forget why we do what we do!

Want to get more done? Here's a great idea

I don't know about you but after the holidays it always seems like I have more stuff. So I'm often compelled to clean out a few closets and de-clutter as part of my New Year's routine.

In fact, I spent last Sunday doing just that and I can't tell you how good it felt to go back to work on Monday morning with two newly organized closets, a clean desk and a clutter-free office.

I felt so much more productive this week, and I was able to think more clearly and accomplish so much more.

All from de-cluttering a few spaces in my home and office!

Did you know the average American wastes 400 hours a year digging through piles trying to find important documents and other important "stuff"?

Not exactly a productive way to spend your time.

Did you also know that we get more mail in one month than our grandparents received in an entire lifetime? No wonder we have so much clutter!

And, that's BEFORE you include email, information we print off the internet and other notes and papers we accumulate.

And when all of those papers seem useful and important, what do you do with it all and how in the world are you supposed to organize it?

I think so often we don't know HOW to handle it so what ends up happening is that instead of being able to use all of this great information we have saved, it just becomes more piles of clutter.

And we end up wasting astronomical amounts of money, time and energy because we have to go through all this stuff every time we want to find something we need.

Tired of failing on your New Year's Resolutions?
