Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW ) is massive initiative to inspire young people (and the young at heart) to embrace innovation, imagination, and creativity. To think big. To turn our ideas into reality. To make our mark!

I had the honor and privilege of being the emcee and moderator for a panel for GEW Sacramento called "No Fear.  No Box.  Let's Go!

It was so exciting to be connected to tens of thousands of people in 78 countries around the world all participating in GEW! 

A panel of extraordinary entrepreneurs and strategists shared with us their perspective on successful entrepreneurship in the 21^st Century. 

Here are questions I asked the panel and some of the take-aways I found fascinating:

No Fear.

Q. How can you be an entrepreneur in the 21^st Century - where rapid change is the norm - without fear?

A. There will always be fear.  The key is how you respond to it.  "Feel the fear and do it anyway" was the consensus of the group.  If you aren't feeling any fear, you are stuck in your comfort zone.  I belive a good degree of fear is crucial wild success.

No Box.

Q. So how do you blow up the box?  What are some of the innovative trends you think are vital to entrepreneurial success in the 21^st Century.

A. The Internet has blown up the box!  Think instant global business with no boundaries!  The panel emphasized the importance of participating in social networking (facebook, twitter, etc) for entrepreneurial success.

Q. What's the one piece of advice you'd give an aspiring entrepreneur to get their business going?

A.

• don't be afraid to ask for help
• get started now - don't wait for perfect
• talk to customers - is your product/service in-demand
• create a Master Mind group of like-minded entrepreneurs

Here is an excerpt from a UC Davis School of Management News Release issued November 17, 2008:

Women's Gains in Politics Not Seen in Board Rooms, CEO Offices

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Half of California's 400 largest public companies have no women in top executive offices, according to a study reported today by University of California, Davis, researchers. Almost half do not have a woman on the board of directors. Nearly a third -- including household names McAfee, Quicksilver and Hansen Natural -- do not have a woman in either a top executive post or on the governing board.

The fourth annual UC Davis Study of California Women Business Leaders found that only 13 of California's 400 largest public companies have a woman CEO. Overall, women hold just 10.9 percent of board seats and executive positions -- insignificant progress from 2007, when the figure was 10.4 percent, and from 2006 and 2005, when it was 10.2 percent.

Is it bad news that there are few women top executives in California's largest public companies? Perhaps not. 

I think more and more women are choosing NOT sit on these boards and are instead creating their own businesses... many with boards of one!

Juxtapose the study with this a letter to the editor from NAWBO Sacramento Chapter President Rosanna Garcia to the Sacramento Bee newspaper (July 23, 2008) in response to the article "Smaller share of U.S. women in work force" (July 22, 2008):

Women aren't dropping out or giving up.  Rather than return to a flagging industrial workforce, one that still pays women only $.59 for every dollar a man makes for the same labor, women in droves are starting their own businesses.  According to the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Women's Business Research, one in 11 adult women is an entrepreneur.  Every minute five women start a business in the United States.  Nearly 10.4 million firms are 50% or more owned by women, and we employ more than 12.8 million people.  Even in this economy, that's about $1.9 trillion in sales.  Between 1997 and 2006, majority women-owned firms grew at twice the rate of all firms (42% vs. 24%).  What does this spell?  Success outside the workforce for millions of women. 

 

The National Association of Women Business Owners--Sacramento Chapter is dedicated to that success.  Through our educational and advocacy programs we help the region's thousands of women entrepreneurs "strive and thrive." I got a chill up my spine yesterday when I caught one of Oprah's "Clean up your messy home" episodes because of the serendipitous timing with this Wednesday's webisode with Jessica Chapman on simple solutions to staying organized.

One of the points Oprah's show made is that when the world around us is in chaos, keeping the space where you live and work clean and organized can help calm that out-of-control feeling.  I don't know about you, but I'm feeling the frenzy right now. 

So, how am I doing with Jessica's three easy things to do to save hours of time and eliminate clutter... a key basket, a waste basket and a file-the-pile hour?

My key basket is the side pocket of my purse.  (I know... not what Jess meant, but I'm a rebel!)  It's workin' for me!  Usually, I spend countless minutes digging through the bottom of my purse or tearing up my house and office trying to find my keys.  Now, I know exactly where to find them.

I did move the waste basket next my incoming snail-mail basket... alas, I haven't been checking it everyday!  Need to work on that.  Maybe I need to move the basket into the bathroom or inside the frig! Jess says it needs to be in a place that you see it a lot!  LOL!!

The file-the-pile hour?  Not happen' yet.  Friday nights... not such a good idea. All I want is to relax. T.G.I.F. I'm thinking Sundays, after I read the paper, might be a better idea.
