Dr. Bregman has a blog, http://www.oralcanceraware.com, in which he shares stories from this important subject.

Did you know:

1. Diagnoses of oral cancer are growing from 9 to 11%, so almost 1 out of 10 of your patients is likely affected;

2. Oral cancer causes twice as many deaths per year as cervical cancer

3. We have a growing ability to catch it early.

4. You will be saving lives.

As Dr. Bregman has written in an article for Dental Economics
in which he shares the following:

"Although I have read and spoken these statistics numerous times, these negative statistics still shock me.

  • Every hour, of every day, of every month, of every year someone
dies as a result of oral cancer.

  • The five-year survival rate of 50% for oral cancer has not changed in the past 35+ years.

  • Of all the new cases of oral cancer diagnosed this year, 25% of those occur in individuals who do not have the previously
accepted standard risk factors for the disease, with a significant
percent having no known risk factors.

  • HPV 16/18 infection has a direct correlation to oral cancer
through sexual activity with the population of concern 18 years (some say 13 years) and older.

  • In a recent nationwide survey, the percentage of patients that reported receiving a complete oral cancer examination at their last dental visit was 20%. One recent statewide survey showed 31%.

Thankfully, there are some positive statistics:

  • Early detection and diagnosis of oral cancer can improve the five-year survival rate to 85% to 90%.

  • As with mammography for breast cancer, colonoscopy for colon cancer, and PSA for prostate cancer, new adjunctive technologies to the complete oral examination

  • The Garasil vaccine (by Merck, Inc.), a series of three injections
(especially when received prior to the onset of sexual activity), will not only dramatically reduce the rate of cervical cancer caused by HPV, but will reduce the related rate of oral cancer as well."

Grow Your Practice, WRAP Your Patients in Care

Subject: Grow Your Practice: WRAP Your Patients in Care
Guest Expert: Bob Spiel of Spiel Consulting.

Summary: We're in a strange environment right now. How important is patient care today? It's never been more important than today. It's never more important because:

  1. Every patient is so valuable in the success of the practice, both immediately and long term.

  2. As we treat patients with outstanding patient service, we're establishing where this practice will be once this recession is over.

  3. The Middle tier of practices in America, and lower tier as well, are cutting back, cutting costs and taking a hunkering down attitude. This is your opportunity, because in closing down things related only to cost, often you sacrifice the personal interactions which will help you now and in the future.

Overview: Do you WRAP your patients in care?

Every patient is critical to the success of that practice. WRAP-ping them with care means:

  1. Warmth - making them feel welcome from the first phone contact to ongoing care

  2. Rapport - communication creates trust and ongoing patients.

  3. Ask - do you ask your patients, and your team, questions to help them understand?

  4. Passion - do your patients feel the passion for your practice?

Whether you have a difficult or easy patient, an adult or child, it all comes down to providing an environment where their hearts are touched. They need to trust you clinically and as a person.

While many dentists love the clinical part of the practice, it is the personal elements that create a patient who comes back just to you. While many can learn the clinical end, the personal end of patient care is an ongoing process between you, your patients, and your team.

Revealed: Facebook for Dentist's - The True Story

team1_200.jpg

Seems everywhere you look Facebook pops up, the twenty=something CEO changing the world...yet does it really mean anything for your dental practice?

According to a recent Deka Laser Survey, the answer is a resounding yes! Dentists love Facebook, communicating via mobile phones, and down at the bottom of the list is good old email.

So what happened? Has the world changed? Even more importantly, is the evidence of dental interest in Facebook a sign that your patients might also share this interest?

And what are you doing about it? At MyDentalChannel, we hope you are doing something more than just complaining.

Here's several ways Facebook can help you, along with simple advice to separate your business persona from your personal (that is, if you want to keep things private, a big issue with Facebook these days.

Rule 1. If you post on Facebook, consider it public; do you want to share everything about your life with your patients? One of the common misconceptions about Facebook is that everyone spends their life on it...

The fact is, many folks do, yet these are people who love this kind of daily social interaction. Others find that posting private information, from where you are to where your kids are, can open up a can of worms.

The decision is yours, of course, just one piece of advice; I keep 2 Facebook accounts (personal for REAL friends and family, and public for my business), and two Pages for business; one for my dental practice, and the other for MyDentalChannel. Because I don't think my patients want to hear the professional side, they want to know me, my Team, and how we can help them.

Like the say, it's not personal, it's business. But if you just randomly post your life story, what happens if a possible patient reads it? Will they interpret it the way you suggest, and with 600 million people visiting Facebook, there is a considerable group of people who will be aware.

Rule 2. Facebook is benefiting local businesses most of all, and this is a tremendous opportunity for any business. If you live anywhere near an urban area, you can be assured lots of people are there; you can look them up, see what they talk about, and more importantly, if you get good, you can target them.

Yet most service-based businesses are succeeding because their local populations are flocking to Facebook, and only a few dental practices (relatively speaking) are using this to their full advantage.

And it all ties into Google and local search, without having any techie help (though that can certainly help if you are really serious about growing your practice).

Remember the supposed promse of the Internet to deliver local customers? Facebook is one of the most important steps in this direction, and if nothing else, allows you to open up a Page (formerly called a Fan Page, now defined by people who "Like" you) where your local patients, and prospective patients, are looking for advice, assistance, and a local face.

This is a great way to network with your local population, just remember the separation of business and personal. It's your choice, yet a choice many of us made when we left our college days behind us, and keep our private lives private because that's how they work best...

That said, it's awesome to meet up with old friends, school chums, and the inevitable local patient looking for dental work in Santa Rosa California...which is where I practice. You really should not let this one pass you by...and of course, it costs nothing!

Rule 3. Be genuine, be real...be you.

Remember the old days, just a few years ago? Dentists would cultivate a confidential rapport with patients through media that did not invite feedback.

So when I wanted to introduce my practice via video on YouTube last year, I created a series that shows my style, approach, and most importantly, tried to recreate for patients the experience, and fun, of working with my practice. I called it "Dr Buzza on why he doesn't wear lab coats", to show people, and make it personal.

Odd isn't it? I warn you to keep things private, yet I make my practice personal...and I do keep my private life private, of course sharing with my true friends and family.

And while there's no right or wrong to Facebook for Dentists, it is clear that your message must resonate with your practice.

And if you are avoiding Facebook and hoping it will go away, this is your wake up call. Newspapers are closing and the Internet is spreading.

Why curse the darkness of your own lack of knowledge, when you can explore the endless possibilities?

When I started my practice 20 plus years ago, I would have LOVED to have this kind of access to my patients. Because they are the center of my practice, and they are going to Facebook in droves.

And so am I...want to be friends and explore? check out my Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/mydentalchannel or join MyDentalChannel - there's no cost and many dentists are taking advantage of the private, GOLD Practice social network built by and for REAL dentists, their Teams, and their practice.

What do you think about Facebook? Let us know, and share your thoughts and input.

The new revolution will not be televised, and it is fun...as long as you take the same professional approach you do for your practice in the "real" world.

Let me know what you think at MyDentalChannel.
Sincerely,
Dr. John Buzza

P.S. Facebook is the real world, filling in the gaps between being able to meet in person. If you need help, let us know and we can direct you to some great resources and advice, and will share more on MyDentalChannel if you think it's worth it..so let me know!

Connecting Social Media ROI to Your Dental Practice - Digital Publishing & What Your Patients Are Doing Right Now

Dr. John Buzza - Founder of MyDentalChannel

From Dr. John Buzza

As a dentist who began his first social media network (private) in 2008, The Gold Practice Network (which is now open at no cost), something inspired me today that I just have to share some insights, truths, and even a few lies about social media and your dental practice....

As I started the soft landing from my summer vacation, I began catching up on some articles. and this one caught my eye.

Is Social Media a Fad? from Dental Economics

The article gives a good, introductory overview of social media, and as both a practicing dentist AND practicing social media entrepreneur, I really like what it shares...just wanted to add a few ideas:

There is 1 essential secret that I have learned, that will help you manage this whole world of social medai and take only 10 minutes a week (not a day, who has that?)

(and I'm not trying to get all Yoda on you, but the "there's no try, only do" really applies here!). Here it goes:

    1. Once a week I go to my blog (because most dentists don't need to hear from me daily right?); I can choose any day of the week, and for me it's most often Monday mornings,(except for today when I'm coming back to reality after vacation...so I'm smiling!)

    2. I write about what matters, what's fun, and what inspires me, like the Dental Economics article, and hit SAVE, and magically it appears.on my blog...and on Twitter...and Facebook...and the Gold Practice Network (my business social network for dental professionals,

At the same time, it is being sent out to my email subscriber lists developed over 2 years, all formatted and ready to go! Just like what you are reading right now!)

I don't go ANYWHERE online to do this except my blog...and the whole thing is sooo easy to set up, just be careful of what you don't know.....

If you have a blog and want to do this, we use http://friendfeed.com, again at no cost...if not, let me know and I can get a video done showing you all how to set it up.

    3. Now here's the real secret of social media; it is what people are doing...and whether it's Facebook, Twitter, or every other odd name in the book, it doesn't matter. They are connecting and they enjoy it.

The world is moving away from TV's and computers as the only way to reach the Internet; these traditional models are based on people watching, or searching.

Now folks are on their mobile phones, getting emails, social media updates, and on the move. These are communication devices, not work-driven computers, and people are using them to connect via voice, text, internet, twitter, you name it!

One thing I can guarantee you, you and your Team can automate most of it, and when you learn how easy it is, with discretion and integrity, to contact your existing patients and get them to refer others, it becomes so obvious...

Families keep in touch, people reach out, and if you are not there, some smart dentist in your area will be...

Just remember...beyond all those names, it's about people connecting, and looking for answers, at a local level. It is not about computers, it's about people.

And it's happening right now...why let it pass you by when so many others are avoiding it because they do not want to change, in a changing market. .

They call it "personal media" for a reason. It's the personality, voice, and style of your practice that should be conveyed, and not in a salesy manner. It doesn't have to be weird, it has to be you, your Team, and can be done in minutes a week. (better with more though!)

More on this next week...until later, give yourself 5 minutes, free of attitude, to at least explore social media like Facebook and Twitter...

And if you are on them right now, like me, get off! We all need time limits so we can blend the best of both worlds ;-)

    In friendship,

    Dr. John Buzza

PS Thanks to Dental Economics for the article, and inspiration, and thanks to the community at the Gold Practice Network for sharing their expertise and insights so generously! If you are interested, please join us and share your thoughts!
