Is 75,000 Dollars Worth All This? Surfboard, Pajamas…What Are These People Thinking? Part l
Alopeciahope:
I had heard an announcement on a local radio station stating “if you are an entrepreneur and would like to win $75,000, a car, and a condo come to Jillian’s”.Over the next couple of weeks I listened intently to try and gain more details. However, I heard nothing. I called the radio station and was told they didn’t have any more details. After much thought and research (having no clue what Jillians was) I contacted Jillians to find out if they knew more and they did. Once I called them, they said to come by on a Saturday morning in July and I could pick up more details.
When my husband and I arrived at Jillians (which was an hour away from us) we found a line wrapping around the building. We parked our car and stood in line with all the others. Some people started saying they had tried out for “The Apprentice” and were going to audition for “Entrepreneurs” as well. My husband and I looked at each other and said “audtion??!!!”. People seemingly associated with this would come in and out of the building. Sometimes there were camera men, other times there was someone named JJ who would scream announcements at us. Although we were too far back in line to hear clearly what he was saying we heard something about having to sell t-shirts. There was mass confusion as to what we were to do. There was confusion over “being given” a t-shirt to help us sell or having to purchase one t-shirt to use as a show piece to get sales.
As we moved closer to the front of the entrance to the building we were told we had to give a 3 minute audition about why we would be the “ultimate entrepreneur”. Later we were told that we were going to be judged as to how many t-shirts we could sell before midnight of that evening. The details were “spotty” at best. Here I was standing in line thinking I was here “just” to gather information and I had to prepare myself for a 3 minute audition. Thank God that I had dressed presentably that day. Some arrived on the scene quite casually. I saw people in jeans, winter toboggans (remember this was July in HOT NC), wholly t-shirts and jeans, shorts, short shorts, tight clothing, loose clothing, suits, church clothing, pajamas, and cocktail attire. Someone brought his surf board with him. You name it and I saw it. There was pink hair, spiky hair, bare feet, long hair, no hair, flip flops, chewing gum, chewing tobacco, bad breath, sweet cologne and more. I began to wonder what in the world I was doing “here”, but I was determined to learn more about winning $75K, a car, and a condo. Some people wanted a chance to be on TV. Others wanted a chance to win the money. I wanted the chance to hear more about this event to decide what my goals were.
Some people in line around me had performed research and had the scoop, or so they thought. They knew this was an audition for a locally based reality TV show. As I listened and tried to learn I also started writing my 3 minute presentation. I would write and my husband would edit. Then my husband would take away my “script” and tell me to do it from my heart. By the time I got to the front of the line I was as ready as I could be. Cameras were everywhere. Camera men would come up and speak to me as I was waiting to give my presentation. Others around me didn’t seem to prepare anything, they were just going to “wing” it. The mass confusion was everywhere. The more questions we asked the more confused we became. However, we were determined to proceed to learn the facts.
