Don’t just volunteer…sell yourself.

Disney:

I guess they were impressed with my wakeboarding skills (just kidding)…whew, I made it to the next round. We had a meeting at the Capital Events Center, a good 45 minutes from my house, and there was a hurricane warning. But hey, I like a good challenge. I made the drive regardless and it was worth it. Seeing as I had not met anyone involved in the show since I didn’t go to auditions I was quite nervous. But I was pretty impressed, they said there were 300 invited back out of 2500 that auditioned. So at this meeting we were split into groups, then they sent all the groups to separate rooms to discuss our challenge and choose a team leader. In my group, the Black team, I had a NCSU graduate student, a disc jockey business owner, a mortgage broker, a club manager, an ex-entrepreneur and a couple others I don’t remember. Well it came time to pick a leader, of course I was jumping inside…hey, hey, pick me, pick me. I just casually volunteered, as did the graduate student. We discussed for a moment our schedules and it was determined that the graduate student would have more time to devote to the organization of our team…in my head I was thinking… BS, these freaking people have no idea who I am and what a good job I would do. Well come to find out the team leader was the only person that could have direct contact with the producers when we had questions about our challenge. I felt I was at a huge disadvantage by not being the team lead b/c otherwise the producers would just see me as a number. So…first lesson learned, you always have to sell yourself, I should of made sure those other people knew how competitive I was and how great of a team lead I would have been.

The standouts in my group were the NCSU Grad student, The Mole, and myself, we all worked very well together and still remain good friends. It’s funny how the people that were in your original group throughout this whole thing end up being your most honest friends/allies throughout the process. The Mole actually warned me on occasion of those she thought were not being truthful with me that she thought would try and take advantage. Anyway, there was this one guy in our group that said he was a millionaire by like age 25 or something and had since lost it all and was now a parking attendant. A PARKING ATTENDANT, that was an eye opener, you’d think that anyone that has the drive and capability of being a millionaire by age 25 would definitely be doing better than a parking attendant job…makes you wonder how exactly he made that money. Any way like I said we really only had 3 contributors in our group. The business plan was pretty easy, just like what you learn in college, but the financials part of the challenge was the real doozie. In college it was always clear-cut and here there was no right or wrong answer. I guess ‘Producer’ really did know a bit about teaching how the real world works but I wasn’t sold yet, I was still forming my opinion about his character.

Disney,

I appreciate and respect you having to formulate your opinion on me, BUT the comment about the Business Plan being easy and just like what you saw in college I disagree with. If it were so easy why didn't the Black Team win? Also, you have to remember, I know what college you attended! You didn't see that detailed of a Business Plan there!(lol)

Hey now, it helps to have a sense of humor. You and the Black team did a super job on that simple Plan. Good Luck on the next challenge!

Don't be hatin' on UNC-Charlotte. We might not have a football team but the Belk College of Business is awesome. I agree that the ideas in the business plan were indeed not college education material, but the organization and structure skills from college certainly came in handy.

Thanks for the feedback.

Ahhh.....ECU men...what did i warn you about them Disney?? They are obsessed with ECU!

Kiss,

Come on now! You've had enough EXPERIENCE down at East Carolina University to know it's more than a University. It's a Culture. And, although your roots are with the Wolf-pack my guess is Greenville has always welcomed you.

I bet if you and Disney went to ECU together you wouldn't want to leave.

Truly, I know your blood runs purple and I love you for it!

Go Pack!

Hey Disney. Goooooo Niners!

I was gonna make an analogy of Niners and Pittsboro, but I'm feeling charitable today.

I am glad that you are able to recognize me as a Wolfpack supporter. Unfortunately, my blood runs red like the rest of us ;) Just to tell you of my experiences at ECU...they are less than fun to say the least. While the men in Raleigh buy our drinks, the men at ECU have pushed me down in the dance floor, and dumped a cooler of Ice/Ice water on my head while I was sleeping for no apparent reason. Talk about southern hospitality, I would rather be in Raleigh. Maybe I just haven't visited with the right people. I think the only way I COULD have fun down there is if I went with Disney :)

Kiss-
That’s so disappointing. Sounds like you were partying with the “punks” of ECU not the men. Every University has them, right? I bet UNC Charlotte even has a few. I think it’s a quota thing.

Your Drinks will always be on me!

PS: If your blood runs red you are getting too much oxygen (LOL). We all bleed red though. Maybe that makes me an in the closet Wolfpack supporter. Let's keep that between us.

OXOXO

Ok you 3! Let's not get everything started up again. We all know that ECU, State and UNCC SUCK! Just kidding! I had just had to throw that in there! As far as the business plan being easy, you are NUTS!!!! I do agree it was easier than the financials, but I don't think any of it was EASY! It really made you do some thinking. I am grateful to have had that experience and to meet all the CRAZY people along the way! Can't wait to share the FL trip!!!! Or the Angus Barn experience! Have a good one guys & gals!

I guess ECU isn't so hot at soccer, aye...really the only sport that matters anyway. Check it out, they are dropping men's soccer as an intercollegiate sport.
